MAC Mock Ad
As part of the Auburn Industrial Design curriculum, students are required to take a photography course. It was part of the GTA’s responsibilities to develop a project that would become one of the options for the course’s final.
See & Interpret
The creation of this mock ad hinged greatly on the reference images chosen. Here, inspiration was gathered from 40s & 50s makeup ads as well as exsisting MAC ads.

The Shoot
Emma Guthrie, one of Auburn’s Industrial Design Undergraduate students, was photographed for the ad.
Kodak Tri-X 400 was used for the black-and-white photos. The B&W negatives were developed in Wallace Hall’s darkroom on Auburn’s campus.
Cinestil 400D was used for the color photography, developed with Cameragraphics in Auburn, AL.
Camera: Nikon F5
Lens: 24-85 F/4.5

Final Concept
Two full rolls (36 exp) of 35mm film were taken to select the best images for the final spread.
The images were touched up in Lightroom and Photoshop, and then the text and graphic elements were done in InDesign.

Behind the Scenes
Extra photos from the shoot that didn’t quite make the cut.

Check out Emma’s work
A great thank-you to Emma for modeling, and for letting me do her hair and makeup for this shoot!!
This work would not have been nearly as fun without you.
